Using Equal Energy Exchange (E3) to Troubleshoot Work Irritations

troubleshoot-work-irritations

Listen to the full podcast episode to hear how to troubleshoot work irritations:

Are you the person at work who always shows up and gets results? Maybe you are the person who your colleagues or your boss come to when they need someone to work through a difficult project or step in to lead a presentation at the last minute.

Being the “go-to” person may feel good sometimes, especially initially. But over time, you may notice this feeling begins to shift. It may transform into resentment, frustration, or even anger.

You want to help and show up for your people, but at what cost to you? When it comes at the cost of your time and energy and without a reciprocal amount of energy returned, the unequal balance of energy can quickly deteriorate otherwise good relationships. It’s a common problem today even among talented and established individuals, leaders, and teams.

The problem with unequal energy exchange is that it’s often misdiagnosed. When I first speak to individuals, no one ever asks for help with their boundary issues. Instead they explain feeling overwhelmed or carrying resentment towards work or colleagues. Some report feeling that they have no time for themselves and long for the days when they feel free. All of these descriptions disguise what are boundary issues which are a result of unequal energy exchanges.

I can spot the diagnosis of an unequal energy exchange a mile away, and get to the underlying cause, because I’ve experienced it myself. Years ago, I said yes to almost any request for help at work. I performed, I pleased, and I was a producer of much. However, it was energetically taxing me and it was at a cost that I didn’t recognize at the time. I rarely asked for the help that I needed even when I was at my sickest.

Fast forward to today, and the opposite is true. I now use the Equal Energy Exchange (E3) to prevent me from getting into the predicament of being over-extended, annoyed, or worse – resentful.  I have a high value for my energy. I’m a master at establishing and holding my boundaries so that I never sacrifice myself or blame others because I didn’t say no. I know that it is my job to balance the energy scales, not anyone else’s. By understanding the energy exchange I am never a victim and can rectify inequities quickly. I know how to restore energetic equilibrium and as a result my relationships are elevated. I want the same for you.

In this episode on how to troubleshoot work irritations, I share:

  • The many forms of energy we have to give and receive.
  • The two common things that occur when we don’t establish and hold our boundaries.
  • A super powerful tool that will help you set and hold a boundary, no matter how big of an over giver or people pleaser, you are.
  • How to know if there is an equal energy exchange, or if the energy scale is off-balance.
  • The exact words to use to communicate to another that a boundary has been violated.
  • How you can increase your levels of peace and productivity simply by asking for what you want and need.

How Fulfilled Leaders Win Before Most People Wake

how-fulfilled-leaders-win

Listen to the full podcast episode to hear how fulfilled leaders win before most people wake:

We’ve hit that time of the year where it’s easy to feel a little less energy and focus than when the year began. Maybe you’re facing the same struggles that you did last year, or maybe new challenges have risen. Regardless, you want to experience the confidence, energy, and enthusiasm that you notice other high-contributors and strong leaders in your world exhibiting.

The question is, how do some leaders accomplish so much all while seeming to have endless energy to expand themselves, their careers and life? The answer lies in something that I am extremely passionate about, and that is rituals and routines. The masters of their art have a few key rituals throughout the day that deliberately position them for increased productivity, performance, purpose, and peace. I call these the four keys to power.

Specifically, they embrace and refine one ritual that is like high-octane fuel for their mind, body and spirit. It is the secret to turning you into the hero of your own life. Are you ready for it?

It’s the morning ritual.

I first experienced the power of the morning ritual about 25 years ago. I taught early morning fitness classes before my day job to earn money. Magic happened as a result of those 6:00 am classes. Obviously, I felt stronger physically but more importantly I noticed my confidence climb, my creativity increase and I had the calm I needed to focus on work that mattered and to navigate challenges that occurred throughout the day. I also noticed that on the days when I didn’t follow my morning routine I was less  productive, balanced and peaceful.

Fast forward to today and I still believe in the early morning ritual magic. The only difference is that now I know the brain science and proven results behind it. When you have a strong morning ritual, the kind that I’m talking about, you’re going to be able to sustain high output, as well as feel balance and happiness throughout your day. Uncover how so many leaders just like you are elevating their personal mastery and professional impact using an early morning ritual. Then use the 5-step method I share  here to implement your own morning ritual and begin to notice your own performance, joy and focus elevate.

In this episode on how fulfilled leaders win, I share:

  • The two things you must know when it comes to burnout in the workplace
  • The critical first step in the process to escape burnout
  • How to know when it’s time for you to tell your boss you’re overextended,
  • How to position the conversation so that you’re heard and get what you need
  • What to expect your boss’ reaction to be when you have this conversation
  • Why the Hero Complex thinking is not serving you or the people around you
  • Research-backed tips if you are the boss on the receiving end of a direct report’s burnout conversation, and how you can avoid this problem in the first place

How To Tell Your Boss You’re Overextended Without Hurting Your Career

overextended

Listen to the full podcast episode to hear how to tell your boss you’re overextended:

How do I tell my boss that I’m burnt out without jeopardizing my career?

This is a question that I’ve been getting a lot of lately. It seems to be a hot topic for both employees and managers, and for good reason. Employees across all industries are overextended and feeling burnt out in the workplace. If you’re feeling this way, maybe you’ve even tried to fix the problem but haven’t found a successful solution long term.

What I’ve noticed about driven leaders like you is that your strength and success are a blessing and a curse. You have a high threshold for pain, meaning that you are used to being overextended and rarely admit that the weight of all the demands at work and in life are getting to be too much.

The rising workload only continues to rise and if you’re like many there’s a good chance you’re wearing far too many hats and have taken on the responsibilities of too many. You’ve pushed yourself too far for too long, and it’s neither realistic nor sustainable.

At this point, you may even be considering the option of burning it all down and quitting.

Hold on. There’s a step before leaving that you can and should take, and that is to have a candid and constructive conversation with your boss. The chance of things changing for the better is higher than you think, and it is possible to position yourself to build the work and life that you want without compromising your well-being any longer. Consider that not having the conversation is actually irresponsible.

I’m going to share exactly how to approach this conversation with your boss without destroying everything that you have worked so hard for. I’ll even give you the exact words that you can say. The goal of this conversation is to share that you need a change to the current way things are being done. And most good bosses are going to want to help.

If you are a boss, this episode applies to you as well. You know that your employee’s well-being is directly tied to the business outcomes. When employees start sacrificing themselves to produce business results, the business is going to ultimately see it in their bottom lines sooner than later. That’s just a fact.

Once someone is burnt out, productivity and performance drop substantially, and then the chances that your key player is going to seek to leave are dramatically increased too. Checking in on your employees before they reach this level will help to avoid high turnover and increase overall happiness and productivity in the workplace.

When employees voice that the workload has become too much, and when bosses schedule regular conversations with their direct reports, all parties benefit. This collaboration supports employees to thoughtfully and confidently maintain healthy well-being and increase business outcomes.

In this episode I share:

  • The two things you must know when it comes to burnout in the workplace
  • The critical first step in the process to escape burnout
  • How to know when it’s time for you to tell your boss you’re overextended,
  • How to position the conversation so that you’re heard and get what you need

Candid Conflict Conversation Made Easy

You can listen to the full podcast episode here:

Are you someone who tends to avoid the difficult conversations with others? Maybe you are way more interested in keeping the peace over rocking the boat, even if staying quiet is negatively affecting your work or personal life. Having confrontational conversations with someone can be tough, emotional, and uncomfortable. However, I would argue that avoiding these conversations costs you more.  Your ability to engage in difficult conversations is directly proportional to the quality of your relationships, fulfillment of your aspirations, and successful navigation of your career.

As humans, we defer from these candid conversations for many reasons. For example, we don’t want to risk making another person uncomfortable or unhappy. Perhaps you worry that it will hurt your career or destroy someone else’s opinion of you. In reality, not confronting can hurt your relationships and career in another way.  Your voice is your most valuable asset and not using it could hurt your confidence and impact long-term. The most important thing to remember is that with a bit of intention, it is absolutely possible to effectively talk out disagreements and walk away with a positive outcome. Let me show you how my clients and I do this remarkably easily and well!

In this episode I share:

  • A personal story of when I learned how to use intention in my communication, despite feeling uncomfortable
  • Ways that you can reroute your resistance to allowing others to be unhappy
  • Using the acronym VOICE to make conflict conversation easy
  • Why transparency and intention is vital in communication
  • Examples of language to use during challenging conversations to avoid the need for the fight or flight response
  • What happens when we have a breakdown in communication

It’s Time To Rethink How We Approach Productivity

You can listen to the full podcast episode here:

Have you ever returned home from a trip and felt like a completely different person? That happened to me last week after a scenic and peaceful stay in Wyoming. It was a nice change of pace and I was reminded of the power of practicing silence, which inspired today’s podcast episode.

During this COVID era and working from home, our productivity has been challenged. This has a lot to do with the fact that there’s absolutely no separation of home and work. In fact, data has shown that many people are actually working more than they were before. Our computers are quite literally at our fingertips all day, which makes it tempting to continue our work well past our usual hours. This is actually making us LESS productive.

We don’t often think about this, but silence is a crucial part of productivity.  Listening is a critical skill that we’ve lost along the way. We have a way of either undervaluing it or treating it like a luxury. It’s time to make it a priority, and you can do that with three separate practices I share in today’s episode.

Rather than basing your productivity on how many tasks you can complete in one day, try measuring how much of the right work you get done. I’m talking about the creative work. The work that will lead you towards more joy.  Let’s rethink productivity. It’s time to think bigger, bolder, and smarter about your enjoyment of this beautiful life that’s right in front of you.

In this episode, I share:

  • What happens when you value silence, trust yourself, and act on your instincts
  • What is most often missed in our approach to productivity
  • The 3 questions to ask yourself while sitting in silence daily
  • A scientific way to access your brain’s best answers to solve problems and allow for free-flowing thinking
  • Which of your four brain waves to use and how to do so that you access your greatest ideation and productivity state

Don’t Hide In Action For Another Year

You can listen to the full podcast episode here:

Happy New Year friends! It’s a brand new beginning and with that comes new growth and opportunities. In the midst of all the hope and momentum, you may find yourself anxious as you get back to work. A sense of urgency and comparison may even creep in. Don’t let this throw you off course, because this year what you do with those feelings will set the tone for the months to come.

If you’re feeling that too often you’re operating from urgency and self-sacrificing, then you may be at risk of hiding behind busy. You’re drowning in a never-ending to-do list, working sunrise to sundown, and you’re drained when it comes time to the other parts of your life that you value. This is the year to be different. The first step to making real change is to admit it’s not your workload or lack of time. It’s not your circumstances. The problem isn’t the problem. The problem is you.

Those who will be successful in 2021, will do so not because they’re lucky or because they’ve been dealt a better hand. They will succeed because they are prepared. They trained in advance. So now is the time to understand why doing less can actually lead you to serving and enjoying more. It is possible to feel fulfilled by your work, take ownership or your life, and make a life-changing impact for your and others that you are here for.

In this episode, I share:

  • Why rising leaders can’t use their old identity to do their most important work
  • 5 steps to get out of hiding in action using the acronym ADMIT
  • How to drop your inner control freak immediately
  • The physiological reasons for stopping and taking a breath throughout the day

There were several overlapping themes, and their insights are found in this episode!
