Embracing Fear Without Being Flattened By It

embracing fear

Listen to the full podcast episode to learn how to embrace the fear and open yourself up to the best that life has to offer.

My daughter just returned home after her first year of college. When we first dropped her off, there was so much uncertainty, insecurity, hesitation, and fear. Now, nine months later, she’s returned home happy and fulfilled by her experience – even saying she will miss college this summer.

The reason I share this is that nine months ago when we dropped her off, I would never have expected that reaction. That she would have chosen to embrace the fear and open herself up to the full experience. This really got me thinking about fear and how much our attachment to certainty and getting it right can limit us from having deeply satisfying and rewarding experiences.

How easy is it to not want to move forward to embrace the fear and instead clutch onto what we already know?

Here I was seeing through my daughter exactly what happens when we face fear, embrace fear, and ultimately overcome fear. What if she hadn’t been brave? What if she hadn’t faced her fear?  What would she have missed?

Early on, in my work with men and women, I started to see some very clear patterns in the ways talented individuals were stalling on their way to their goals and desires.

Oftentimes, their attempts to avoid situations that might be uncertain were unconsciously disguised by being busy, over-preparing, or refining their work. In short, they were hesitating because of their fear.

Ultimately, it became impossible to innovate, share controversial ideas or effect the change they wanted.

But something profoundly human and magical happens when fear is exposed and the root cause is addressed. When we simply acknowledge that this is fear, I’m afraid, and that I’m going to do it anyway, fear’s power is diminished and this is what it truly means to embrace the fear.

Here’s what you need to remember: You are never going to eliminate fear. But you can be curious about it,  acknowledge it, and have a go-to process to embrace the fear and move through it instead of being flattened by fear.

Bottom line: Without facing fear, your success is impossible.

Even top achievers are afraid.

Warren Buffet was terrified of speaking in public.

Joanna Gaines couldn’t choose a paint color on her first episode of Fixer Upper and felt like an imposter.

Singer, Adele, was known for getting sick before performing live.

These are successful, ambitious, capable people who admit to still being afraid but face the fear and do it anyway.

The good news: you can change your relationship to fear and allow this to be the end of avoiding situations that might bring it.

Tune in to this episode of Playing Full Out to learn the process of embracing fear and creating your most satisfying and rewarding present and future.

How Fulfilled Leaders Win Before Most People Wake

how-fulfilled-leaders-win

Listen to the full podcast episode to hear how fulfilled leaders win before most people wake:

We’ve hit that time of the year where it’s easy to feel a little less energy and focus than when the year began. Maybe you’re facing the same struggles that you did last year, or maybe new challenges have risen. Regardless, you want to experience the confidence, energy, and enthusiasm that you notice other high-contributors and strong leaders in your world exhibiting.

The question is, how do some leaders accomplish so much all while seeming to have endless energy to expand themselves, their careers and life? The answer lies in something that I am extremely passionate about, and that is rituals and routines. The masters of their art have a few key rituals throughout the day that deliberately position them for increased productivity, performance, purpose, and peace. I call these the four keys to power.

Specifically, they embrace and refine one ritual that is like high-octane fuel for their mind, body and spirit. It is the secret to turning you into the hero of your own life. Are you ready for it?

It’s the morning ritual.

I first experienced the power of the morning ritual about 25 years ago. I taught early morning fitness classes before my day job to earn money. Magic happened as a result of those 6:00 am classes. Obviously, I felt stronger physically but more importantly I noticed my confidence climb, my creativity increase and I had the calm I needed to focus on work that mattered and to navigate challenges that occurred throughout the day. I also noticed that on the days when I didn’t follow my morning routine I was less  productive, balanced and peaceful.

Fast forward to today and I still believe in the early morning ritual magic. The only difference is that now I know the brain science and proven results behind it. When you have a strong morning ritual, the kind that I’m talking about, you’re going to be able to sustain high output, as well as feel balance and happiness throughout your day. Uncover how so many leaders just like you are elevating their personal mastery and professional impact using an early morning ritual. Then use the 5-step method I share  here to implement your own morning ritual and begin to notice your own performance, joy and focus elevate.

In this episode on how fulfilled leaders win, I share:

How To Tell Your Boss You’re Overextended Without Hurting Your Career

overextended

Listen to the full podcast episode to hear how to tell your boss you’re overextended:

How do I tell my boss that I’m burnt out without jeopardizing my career?

This is a question that I’ve been getting a lot of lately. It seems to be a hot topic for both employees and managers, and for good reason. Employees across all industries are overextended and feeling burnt out in the workplace. If you’re feeling this way, maybe you’ve even tried to fix the problem but haven’t found a successful solution long term.

What I’ve noticed about driven leaders like you is that your strength and success are a blessing and a curse. You have a high threshold for pain, meaning that you are used to being overextended and rarely admit that the weight of all the demands at work and in life are getting to be too much.

The rising workload only continues to rise and if you’re like many there’s a good chance you’re wearing far too many hats and have taken on the responsibilities of too many. You’ve pushed yourself too far for too long, and it’s neither realistic nor sustainable.

At this point, you may even be considering the option of burning it all down and quitting.

Hold on. There’s a step before leaving that you can and should take, and that is to have a candid and constructive conversation with your boss. The chance of things changing for the better is higher than you think, and it is possible to position yourself to build the work and life that you want without compromising your well-being any longer. Consider that not having the conversation is actually irresponsible.

I’m going to share exactly how to approach this conversation with your boss without destroying everything that you have worked so hard for. I’ll even give you the exact words that you can say. The goal of this conversation is to share that you need a change to the current way things are being done. And most good bosses are going to want to help.

If you are a boss, this episode applies to you as well. You know that your employee’s well-being is directly tied to the business outcomes. When employees start sacrificing themselves to produce business results, the business is going to ultimately see it in their bottom lines sooner than later. That’s just a fact.

Once someone is burnt out, productivity and performance drop substantially, and then the chances that your key player is going to seek to leave are dramatically increased too. Checking in on your employees before they reach this level will help to avoid high turnover and increase overall happiness and productivity in the workplace.

When employees voice that the workload has become too much, and when bosses schedule regular conversations with their direct reports, all parties benefit. This collaboration supports employees to thoughtfully and confidently maintain healthy well-being and increase business outcomes.

In this episode I share:

  • The two things you must know when it comes to burnout in the workplace
  • The critical first step in the process to escape burnout
  • How to know when it’s time for you to tell your boss you’re overextended,
  • How to position the conversation so that you’re heard and get what you need

Five Mistakes The Overwhelmed Make In Their Approach That The Fulfilled Do Not

five mistakes

Listen to the full podcast episode to hear the five mistakes the overwhelmed make:

There’s something rare that only 2% of the world has. That is a written personal vision or a painted picture of your ideal future. Many overwhelmed and hurried leaders attempt to accomplish this, but they end up missing the mark. They take shortcuts that ultimately take away from the real value of this exercise.

Taking the time to get crystal clear on your personal vision is imperative for talented leaders like you. Maybe you have climbed the ladder of success, but you still aren’t quite where you want to be. You don’t quite feel like the person that you’ve always wanted to become. You are not alone. Since the start of the pandemic, the rising workloads, and blurred boundaries have made the need for clarity of purpose and identity necessary, now more than ever.

So, the need for change and for identifying your ideal future is there. But too often, the question of what do you want is answered with I don’t know. You may know what you don’t want. You don’t want to work 24/7 and miss out on time with your family. You don’t want to continue putting yourself last. You don’t want to continue feeling like you just need to make it through the day. However, maybe sitting down and writing out details of what you do want for this next phase of life seems daunting. Maybe it even feels like just another demand that you don’t have time for.

Solidifying this vision for yourself may even feel stressful because you don’t want to identify it and then not reach it or, worse, end up realizing that your goals are taking a different direction entirely. Here comes the good news. Getting your vision down is more important than getting it right. The fun part of a vision is understanding that it is editable at all times.

Today, I’m going to simplify this process of identifying your vision. I’m going to provide you with a way to get clear of your ideal future and get your vision down even if you’ve failed to do so in the past. This jumpstart will fuel you to rise above the noise and aspire to what it is you truly desire and be the person you are here to become.

In this episode I share:

  • Why an aspirational vision is so important on a personal and scientific basis
  • An exercise to help you get clear on an ideal future and get your vision down, even if you’ve failed to do so in the past
  • 5 common mistakes that will make identifying your personal and professional vision extremely difficult, and how to avoid them
  • How to move from reasonable thinking to magical thinking in order to build the life and work you truly want
  • The 3 simple questions guarantee you capture a picture of your ideal future without the second-guessing

Don’t Hide In Action For Another Year

You can listen to the full podcast episode here:

Happy New Year friends! It’s a brand new beginning and with that comes new growth and opportunities. In the midst of all the hope and momentum, you may find yourself anxious as you get back to work. A sense of urgency and comparison may even creep in. Don’t let this throw you off course, because this year what you do with those feelings will set the tone for the months to come.

If you’re feeling that too often you’re operating from urgency and self-sacrificing, then you may be at risk of hiding behind busy. You’re drowning in a never-ending to-do list, working sunrise to sundown, and you’re drained when it comes time to the other parts of your life that you value. This is the year to be different. The first step to making real change is to admit it’s not your workload or lack of time. It’s not your circumstances. The problem isn’t the problem. The problem is you.

Those who will be successful in 2021, will do so not because they’re lucky or because they’ve been dealt a better hand. They will succeed because they are prepared. They trained in advance. So now is the time to understand why doing less can actually lead you to serving and enjoying more. It is possible to feel fulfilled by your work, take ownership or your life, and make a life-changing impact for your and others that you are here for.

In this episode, I share:

  • Why rising leaders can’t use their old identity to do their most important work
  • 5 steps to get out of hiding in action using the acronym ADMIT
  • How to drop your inner control freak immediately
  • The physiological reasons for stopping and taking a breath throughout the day
  • Why leading from your ego is not authentic
