How To Tell Your Boss You’re Overextended Without Hurting Your Career

overextended

Listen to the full podcast episode to hear how to tell your boss you’re overextended:

How do I tell my boss that I’m burnt out without jeopardizing my career?

This is a question that I’ve been getting a lot of lately. It seems to be a hot topic for both employees and managers, and for good reason. Employees across all industries are overextended and feeling burnt out in the workplace. If you’re feeling this way, maybe you’ve even tried to fix the problem but haven’t found a successful solution long term.

What I’ve noticed about driven leaders like you is that your strength and success are a blessing and a curse. You have a high threshold for pain, meaning that you are used to being overextended and rarely admit that the weight of all the demands at work and in life are getting to be too much.

The rising workload only continues to rise and if you’re like many there’s a good chance you’re wearing far too many hats and have taken on the responsibilities of too many. You’ve pushed yourself too far for too long, and it’s neither realistic nor sustainable.

At this point, you may even be considering the option of burning it all down and quitting.

Hold on. There’s a step before leaving that you can and should take, and that is to have a candid and constructive conversation with your boss. The chance of things changing for the better is higher than you think, and it is possible to position yourself to build the work and life that you want without compromising your well-being any longer. Consider that not having the conversation is actually irresponsible.

I’m going to share exactly how to approach this conversation with your boss without destroying everything that you have worked so hard for. I’ll even give you the exact words that you can say. The goal of this conversation is to share that you need a change to the current way things are being done. And most good bosses are going to want to help.

If you are a boss, this episode applies to you as well. You know that your employee’s well-being is directly tied to the business outcomes. When employees start sacrificing themselves to produce business results, the business is going to ultimately see it in their bottom lines sooner than later. That’s just a fact.

Once someone is burnt out, productivity and performance drop substantially, and then the chances that your key player is going to seek to leave are dramatically increased too. Checking in on your employees before they reach this level will help to avoid high turnover and increase overall happiness and productivity in the workplace.

When employees voice that the workload has become too much, and when bosses schedule regular conversations with their direct reports, all parties benefit. This collaboration supports employees to thoughtfully and confidently maintain healthy well-being and increase business outcomes.

In this episode I share:

  • The two things you must know when it comes to burnout in the workplace
  • The critical first step in the process to escape burnout
  • How to know when it’s time for you to tell your boss you’re overextended,
  • How to position the conversation so that you’re heard and get what you need
  • What to expect your boss’ reaction when you have this conversation
  • Why the Hero Complex thinking is not serving you or the people around you
  • Research-backed tips if you are the boss on the receiving end of a direct report’s burnout conversation, and how you can avoid this problem in the first place

Five Mistakes The Overwhelmed Make In Their Approach That The Fulfilled Do Not

five mistakes

Listen to the full podcast episode to hear the five mistakes the overwhelmed make:

There’s something rare that only 2% of the world has. That is a written personal vision or a painted picture of your ideal future. Many overwhelmed and hurried leaders attempt to accomplish this, but they end up missing the mark. They take shortcuts that ultimately take away from the real value of this exercise.

Taking the time to get crystal clear on your personal vision is imperative for talented leaders like you. Maybe you have climbed the ladder of success, but you still aren’t quite where you want to be. You don’t quite feel like the person that you’ve always wanted to become. You are not alone. Since the start of the pandemic, the rising workloads, and blurred boundaries have made the need for clarity of purpose and identity necessary, now more than ever.

So, the need for change and for identifying your ideal future is there. But too often, the question of what do you want is answered with I don’t know. You may know what you don’t want. You don’t want to work 24/7 and miss out on time with your family. You don’t want to continue putting yourself last. You don’t want to continue feeling like you just need to make it through the day. However, maybe sitting down and writing out details of what you do want for this next phase of life seems daunting. Maybe it even feels like just another demand that you don’t have time for.

Solidifying this vision for yourself may even feel stressful because you don’t want to identify it and then not reach it or, worse, end up realizing that your goals are taking a different direction entirely. Here comes the good news. Getting your vision down is more important than getting it right. The fun part of a vision is understanding that it is editable at all times.

Today, I’m going to simplify this process of identifying your vision. I’m going to provide you with a way to get clear of your ideal future and get your vision down even if you’ve failed to do so in the past. This jumpstart will fuel you to rise above the noise and aspire to what it is you truly desire and be the person you are here to become.

In this episode I share:

  • Why an aspirational vision is so important on a personal and scientific basis
  • An exercise to help you get clear on an ideal future and get your vision down, even if you’ve failed to do so in the past
  • 5 common mistakes that will make identifying your personal and professional vision extremely difficult, and how to avoid them
  • How to move from reasonable thinking to magical thinking in order to build the life and work you truly want
  • The 3 simple questions guarantee you capture a picture of your ideal future without the second-guessing

Five Strategies To Position You For A Breakthrough

breakthrough

Listen to the full podcast episode to hear the 5 strategies to position you for a breakthrough:

As we enter the excitement of a new year, you’re likely flooded with messages about creating another set of goals or resolutions. Personally, I don’t feel like the calendar has to change in order to feel and see a fresh start. Every single day is a new beginning and a chance to start anew. As passionate as I am about being able to push the reset button anytime, this new year, without a doubt, adds a greater feeling of excitement!

While many use the word “goal”, that term has always felt lifeless and one-dimensional to me. Instead, I prefer the word “breakthrough”. It has much more emotion and feeling. A breakthrough occurs when you unlock your limitations and the once-impossible becomes possible. Getting clear on what a breakthrough outcome would look like for you is particularly important at this time.

This year is already proving to be a year of well-earned and well-deserved breakthroughs. So many have been welled up mentally, emotionally, professionally, and personally. We are ready to bust through the internal and external limitations that have kept us playing small and holding back. Some have already let the dam burst. Others are committing and positioning themselves currently.

To begin your breakthrough, you must first identify and make the declaration of the breakthrough you want to experience this year. Maybe the breakthrough that you want is to have a greater balance between work and home, maybe it’s to do less and enjoy more, or maybe it’s a breakthrough to experience a promotion. The great thing about your breakthroughs is that they have a ripple effect that heals and catapults our workplaces, homes, and the world. When you break through your limitations, not only you but your family and those you work with, and those you serve are set in motion to experience their breakthrough too. That’s compelling, right?

I’m going to share specific and practical strategies with you so that you can lean in, let go, trust yourself, and take your next right action. It’s a year of unlimited possibility. It’s your time to unlock and breakthrough anything that’s been holding you back. When you do you will see your transformation occur in every category of your life naturally and automatically.

In this episode I share:

  • An explanation of why you must first identify the breakthrough that you want to experience before taking action
  • A way to condition our nervous system in advance to allow for the breakthrough
  • Common ways that we tend to block our breakthroughs from occurring
  • 5 simple strategies to be positioned for a breakthrough this year
  • A strategy to move from negative thoughts into joy and inspiration
  • A reminder of why play is important to productivity

Have you ever had one of those days that just feels so intense? From the second you wake up, feelings of anxiety and stress rush over you. You know what I’m talking about. You’re scattered, far from present, and completely ungrounded. Maybe by now you’ve realized that these pressured pace mornings are more the norm than not.

I’ve been observing a disturbing trend that has been occurring, even before the pandemic began. It’s the noticeable and detrimental overstimulation of so many. We can’t go more than one hour without checking our email, and find it impossible to be fully present in conversations with our coworkers or even our children.

The statistics show that this is a proven problem among our society. 83% of United States workers suffer from work related stress. 63% of workers are ready to quit their job because of stress. And the problem isn’t just in our workplaces. Our mental health is affected every single day by constantly being in this state of acceleration. It all comes down to being ungrounded, and it’s an epidemic of its own.

When we’re ungrounded, our minds move to a million different places at any given second. On a scientific level, what we’re feeling is our sympathetic nervous system in fight or flight mode. There are ways to break free of this era of constant motion and it’s more important now than ever.

Incorporating short, easy daily grounding practices has made a world of difference in my mental, physical and performance health, and I know they can do the same for you. A few intentional shifts can stop the buzzing and help you to achieve a better quality of life  and higher levels of performance on-going.

In this episode I share:

  • My perspective on what it means to be grounded and my daily grounding practices
  • Sure signs that you are ungrounded
  • Ways to instantly center yourself so that you can be up to 40% more productive
  • What happens when we stop thinking that we should be somewhere other than where we are
  • An easy 30-second system that drops dopamine to your nervous system and informs your brain you are stronger than you think. (Can be done every time you use the bathroom).

We are in the homestretch of 2021. Can you believe it? That means soon we’ll be flooded with messages of setting ambitious goals for the upcoming year. In fact, you may already be thinking about yours. Of course, it’s important to create a vision for yourself as you prepare for the year ahead. After all, without a plan, we drift.

However, before you begin to set up your future, there’s a crucial step that is too often overlooked, that is, we must first complete our current year. You probably know that if we don’t take stock and learn from history, we repeat it, right?

Imagine being aware of both the successes that you’ve had this year and the mistakes you’ve made along the way. When you rush into a new plan without this step of reflection and celebration, you’re bound to recreate more of the same.

To help you with this process, I have a tried and tested exercise that you can take and immediately incorporate into your planning for 2022. It’s a method that has been responsible for increasing bottom lines, identifying high value work and improving relationships with oneself and others. When put in motion, you will position yourself for the experience you truly want for this coming year.

In this episode I share:

Do you consider yourself a lifelong learner? Maybe you consume countless podcast episodes and always end your day reading some kind of professional development book. Knowledge is power, right? Well, that is until it’s not. What I’m saying is that when we spend so much time taking in new information but not actually doing anything with it, it begins to hinder us from taking the next right step.

In my recent conversations with talented and smart individuals, many are struggling with shifting from knowing to applying. They have incredible knowledge, ideas, and solutions to problems. Despite these ideas, they aren’t applying them. They aren’t taking action. Over the years, I have learned that there’s no reason to take in information if you aren’t going to implement it. In other words, until you’ve applied what you’ve learned, you haven’t started the forward motion towards improvement.

You may not realize it, but that idea that you’ve been sitting on — you know the one —  well it has the power to improve and maybe even save another person’s life if you take action on it. If you applied what you knew, something could be made better somewhere in the world. I just know it. Unfortunately, too many get stuck. They tell themselves stories that aren’t true such as “It’s not the right time to act on this”, “I don’t know if I’m ready” or “I just have to hire the team before I can start this project”.

While some are stuck in a place of confusion and tweaking and “this before that”, the successful and fulfilled leaders of the world are taking risks and imperfect action. It’s natural to feel the need to acquire more and more information because you think you don’t know enough to get started. It’s unpredictable. But there will always be uncertainty and unpredictability. Now is as good a time as any to make your own rules, apply what you know, and take the leap towards moving the needle on what you are meant to do.

In this episode I share:

  • A simple tool that has been responsible for multiple million dollar careers, sales, and business growth when applied
  • Making the important shift from knowing to applying and distinguishing the difference
  • How to spot 3 key stranglers that may be stopping you from forward motion
  • The ONE simple step that will move mountains in your business and life
  • How to get started on the meaningful project that’s calling you
  • Defining the revolutionary concept of taking unverified action

How To Make Work Life Fulfillment A Reality For Women

how-to-make-work-life-fulfillment-a-reality-for-women

You can listen to the full podcast episode here:

As of February 2021, nearly 3 million women had left the workforce. That number has only risen since then, as women step out due to circumstances such as extreme burnout and a desperate desire to take a break from trying to achieve some sort of work-life balance. This is the story of many women in today’s workforce, as they want to make work-life fulfillment work for them, and yet today’s way of doing things is simply not sustainable.

I heard this point of view firsthand when I recently spoke to a group of established female leaders at a premier recruiting firm. These women, like so many others that I talk to, are successful, talented, and looked up to by their peers. They are also overloaded and battle internally with how to do meaningful and life-changing work they do without sacrificing their personal life and family to do it. There is a solution that will allow female leaders everywhere to shift from the hustle and overwhelm to fulfillment and balance.

The answer is not in working more, doing more, or being more. Working harder does not equal success. In fact, nothing in our external world actually has to change at all. The solution to achieving work-life fulfillment lies in paying more attention to our own blindspots and self-imposed limitations by internally activating. More specifically, when you align your identity with your desired future, you can become the bold, fulfilled female leader that you’ve always dreamed of being. Better yet, you can do all of this without sacrificing everything you’ve already worked so hard to create.

In this episode I share:

  • My perspective on today’s female workforce and their leaders
  • Specific steps to move from the overloading hustling female leader to the fulfilled female leader
  • The number one mistake I see being made over and over again when it comes to work-life balance
  • An analogy to explain how women can create work-life success and satisfaction at the same time
  • A question that every woman in their 40s and 50s should answer in order to thrive in this next decade.
  • 3 ways that the fulfilled female leader internally activates

A 2021 survey reported that nearly 90% of workers experienced burnout in the past year. In addition, more than half of people surveyed said that their workloads had actually increased during the pandemic. Clearly a work-life balance is not being achieved, and what we’re doing in the workforce is not working.

The big question is, what can you do as the leader of your team to ensure that your people are being taken care of? Taking the time and mental space to consider this question is important, because one thing is for certain. The data shows that employees are leaving their workplace at record numbers and either seeking out employers who better meet their lifestyle needs and desires or leaving the workforce altogether.

As a leader, it is your job to make sure that your team feels respected and recognized, and that they are given opportunities to excel at what they do. As the saying goes, if you don’t invest in the root, you won’t receive or produce the fruit. The same goes for your team. You have to nurture and invest in them. Take every opportunity to let your team know that they matter. When your people feel like they are genuinely seen and encouraged, they will be inspired to do great work. If you commit to this approach of leading from the heart, you just may find it to be the best investment you will ever make in your business.

In this episode I share:

  • A personal story of the moment I felt seen in a new and important way
  • 5 concrete steps you can take to build a culture and team that feels like they belong
  • What the data shows about burnout and employees leaving the workforce
  • A reminder to check in on yourself to determine if you are nurturing and investing in your team

What is the one thing that we all strive for? It’s Happiness. What we think it takes to achieve happiness is what we get wrong. We often think that if we just get that raise, close the deal, increase our bank account, sell the company, lose a few pounds, or fill in the blank, then we will be happy. Within the last 20 years, science has proven this is backward.

Imagine for a moment that you don’t need anything to change in order for you to be happy or positive. Now imagine because you are positive, the predictability of those things you want to happen actually increases. This is the reality that most people don’t know or don’t use to their advantage.

We have to get beyond the idea that our external world controls our happiness. It’s time to take positivity into your own hands. With a few simple tools and strategies, it is possible to make the act of bringing positivity into your home and workplace a habit that positively affects those around you and your bottom line.

Being the leader that you are, building a positive culture is just about the most important thing you can do for the success of yourself and your team. It is scientifically proven that negatively affects the morale, performance, and productivity of individuals and teams in a harmful way. Conversely, positivity has been proven to decrease turnover and increase productivity and profits.

Today I’m answering the question, what can we do as individuals and leaders to fuel positivity in the workplace and home? How can we become positively infectious leaders, especially in these uncertain times? You have the choice to become your own positive power plant and share that magic with others while driving business results. All it takes is some intentional shifts in your mindset and daily habits.

In this episode I share:

  • The top 3 strategies for any positively infectious leader to bring to the workplace
  • The high cost of negativity in the economy
  • My perspective on positivity, along with the strategies backed by science that increase productivity, decrease turnover and improve bottom lines
  • 3 limiting myths about the positivity that we have been unconsciously trained to believe
  • How to become a positive power plant for yourself and others
