The ‘Irresistably Attractive’ Factor- Do you have it?

Several years ago I learned that everything I thought about being successful and happy was a lie.

I’d spent many of my early years consciously and sometimes unconsciously trying to keep it neat, fix it, organize it, keep it moving, make it look good.

I recognize in hindsight it was to get people to like me.   Once I had ‘manipulated’ them into liking me, I then realized the game wasn’t over.  Now I had to maintain their acceptance and approval.

I wasn’t as calculated as it might sound.  I didn’t consciously realize I was doing this. Like most of us, I’d picked this way of being up from those around me.  I didn’t challenge it.  It must ‘work,’ I thought.  After all, everybody’s doing it.

After years of this act, I became exhausted from the level of energy it took to keep it up, and I finally gave it up.

I started showing up at a higher level and exposing wherever I was, how I was feeling, and where I was at honestly. I said what I really planned to do with my life.  I was myself.

And I found a funny thing started happening…

While I’d thought  people would stop liking me when I wasn’t trying so hard, instead I found people actually liked me more.  I started connecting to people in ways I had never experienced in my relationships and in business.  And my life –in both areas– took off.

It turns out it’s not only more fulfilling to be unattached to whether or not people like you.  It’s also irresistibly attractive.

Here’s the deal: We all want to be our true selves and connect with others in a meaningful, honest and open way.  Connection and contribution to others are our two highest  needs.

To get these needs met we must be honest with ourselves and others —  not just some of the time, but all of the time.  The good news is we become fulfilled  and irresistibly attractive when we do.

In fact, our business and relationship success relies on our being able to expose ourselves as we are–our preferences, our likes, our dislikes.

Take a look at the following video to see what one researcher found on the topic of vulnerability, success, and happiness, and how to become a magnet of rich relationships, success, and fulfillment.  You’ll be happy you did.

The Secret Ingredient to Big Business & Bold Living

I still remember how fast my heart was beating when I dropped the check in the mailbox for advanced training to start by own business; it was for a Mastery Coaching Program.  I wrote that check in 2000, and it was for $10,000.  It was the most I had EVER invested in myself and my business by a longshot!

For the prior six months I’d told myself it was crazy to spend that kind of money on Coaching.

But when I finally made the decision — that it was exactly what I must do — I felt an enormous sense of relief, excitement, and possibility.

In the moment I mailed that check, everything was different.  And I’m confident it was more than just about the service I was going to receive.  It was about giving myself permission to step out and build the life and business I TRULY desired.

And that’s when it got interesting…

Once I fully committed the most amazing thing happened.  Within weeks, in the most illogical and un-suspecting set of circumstances, the company I worked for gave me a check for $10,018—almost exactly the amount I’d committed for my advanced training!

I’m confident that once I finally made the decision to leave my career of ten years and commit to my passion, the universe conspired to support me in it.

So what’s the secret ingredient?  It’s COMMITMENT.

When you finally decide to commit, you show up at 100% versus half-way.  You bring your best to the table, and things happen.  People, opportunities, and clients (new or ones that previously existed, but you didn’t see) show up — sometimes instantly.

Being uncommitted with one foot on the boat and one foot on the dock, drains your time, your focus and your energy. It’s a guaranteed life and business buster.

What have you been considering, researching, or toying with but not committing to?

Is it investing in a class you’ve wanted to take?  Taking your family to Hawaii?  Writing the business proposal you’ve been putting off?  Offering your new product or service?  Enhancing your relationship? Starting your own venture?

Here are four steps to move your idea into a commitment.

Action Step #1  Decide.  Ask yourself, “Will taking this action move me closer or further away from my goal?”   It’s a simple yes or no.

Action Step #2 Put a stake in it.  Take an action in the physical to lock in your commitment mentally.  Put money down.  Make business cards with your ideal career position or new company’s name.  Sign an agreement.  When you commit by taking an action, your mind and body move forward naturally to be consistent and in alignment with your new commitment.

Action Step #3 Tell someone.  Saying what you’re doing aloud affirms “yes, I am” and invokes your commitment.

Action Step #4  Build in Accountability.  There is power in being held accountable in order to commit.  Nobody likes to break agreements with others. Yet it’s often easy to break or “re-negotiate” commitments with ourselves, right?

It’s easy to skip your workout at 5:30 am when there’s nobody waiting on the other side.  But put in a personal trainer or a friend, and you’re there!

A personal trainer, life coach, assistant, project director and even a cleaning lady can hold you accountable.   I’ve used all of these including some key friends to hold me accountable and move me to commit.

Bottom line:  If you REALLY want an out-of-this-world kinda year, you are being beckoned to commit to something greater than you already have in the past.

Sure, it may be uncomfortable, uncertain and scary.  (It is for everybody taking on something new.)

But like the cold swimming pool you resist, once you jump in, it’s a matter of minutes until you adjust to the new temperature.

I recently committed myself to something BIG and new in my business.  Funny thing happened when I jumped in and committed– I found the water to be just PERFECT!

I’d love to hear your stories or go ahead and write your commitment on the blog!

If you like this, send it to your friend.  And make sure to come on over and sign up for my newsletter!

As always, I appreciate you reading and love the interaction I have with you!

Happy Swimming!  The water’s warm!

Four Steps to More Time, More Money & More Fun in 2011!

I know it’s the time of year to make resolutions, but I don’t do resolutions.  Resolutions are charged with so much negativity and self-torture.  You can almost feel your face scrunch up as you say the word, can’t you?

Instead, I decide on projects that I want to achieve in my business and experience in my life.  And I narrow the number down to a maximum of two to three projects at a time.

Why the short list?

Too often I find entrepreneurs and ‘passionate life-goers’ addicted to too many open and unfinished projects.  They’re overextended physically, emotionally, spiritually – and often financially.

So that brings me to, “What are you doing today?”  Are you working on your most spiritually and financially profitable projects and goals?  Do you know what they are?

Here are the four steps you must take to experience high-leverage, high-paying, and highly fulfilling activities this year!

Step 1:  Know what you want.

Narrow your focus to two or three projects.

A project to me is something that can be achieved in six months.  I find this time frame is one that most of us can easily wrap our minds around.

What do I want to achieve in the next six months?  Start as if you are six months out from now. What made the first half of this year one that has you strutting, smiling, and planning a night on the town to celebrate yourself?

You have the answer.   You know what it is.  Be willing to cough it up instead of suppressing it until you figure out “how” first.

To be honest, the “how” is none of your business—especially in this step. You can leave that to the higher powers that be. But the act of ASKING AND GOING FOR WHAT YOU WANT is 100% your responsibility. No one can do that for you but you.

Step 2:  Become Brutally Decisive.

This means make decisions fast.  Being a brutal decision maker is vital to living bold, rich and fulfilled.  This year commit to decrease the lag time between the moment you have an idea and when you take action on it.

This step alone will drastically change the way you experience success emotionally, financially and spiritually in 2011!

Waiting longer will never make you more certain.  Start moving and you will get clear!  Success is too often stalled because we are waiting and thinking about it.  You can’t make progress without making a decision.

Know this:  You are ready, and its time to make the decision.

Here’s what you do.

Write down 3 projects in your business and life that you’ve been considering or researching and not taking action on.

They should be yes/no decisions. Are you going to sign up for that class? Call that contact? Meet with the potential client? Write a proposal for the new business or investor?  Obtain the information you need to launch the new product, or hire the right support staff to take your business to the next level?

Once you’ve written down the three projects, give yourself 60 seconds to write down your decision for each item.  The question is:  “Should I move forward with it?”

It’s just a “yes” or “no.”

(Do this exercise for the next 60 seconds.  That’s how long it takes to become a Brutal Decision Maker.)

Step 3:  Give it a birthday.

In essence, give each project a due date. This isn’t new, but it’s new to those who never do it.  Determine when you want to have your project born.  Then, reverse engineer the process to build out the timeline.

Putting an “alive-line” to our projects helps us visualize the project completed.  Our body then naturally moves to fulfill and connect with the mind’s vision.

Step 4:  Follow the recipe.

Too often we are trying to invent our recipes from scratch when we either already possess our own successful recipe OR we could GET THE RECIPE FROM SOMEONE ELSE.

If you haven’t had prior success in this area, identify three people who have successfully achieved what you want, and learn how they did it.  Three will give you the confidence that what you want can be done.  The three will also provide you with more tools, strategies, and options to choose from.

You will save time moving to your end-goal more quickly.  You’ll also be more fulfilled spending the extra time doing what you love and do best!

(Tip:  This year commit to not short-cutting the recipe by employing do-it-yourself methods…which you never do yourself!  In other words don’t do things on the cheap.  Your results will reflect it.  Invest.  You are worth it!)

Bottom line:  Get the support you need to access the most direct, proven method every time!

Wishing you a fantastic day (and year), and I look forward to talking with you again soon.

Let me know if you’ve got any thoughts on this topic or have a story to share.  And if you’ve found this post helpful, go ahead and share it with a friend!

Enthusiastically,

Rita

Techniques To Get Results Twice as Fast

Do you have a great idea that continues to be…just a great idea? Do you talk yourself out of it before you even begin?

I spoke with a client last week who has a great idea for a new product.  His product would allow him to initiate conversations with his desired, prospective clients.  Even his current clients could use it! It is original and it excites him tremendously.  He talks about it repeatedly.  Still further, when I ask him what would make his year fabulous, he always answers, “I want to turn this idea into a real, living product!”   Eureka!  A dream that is waiting to be realized!

Ahh, but wait, after he passionately describes this fabulous product, he quickly launches into the reasons it is too much for him to begin.  His biggest fear is that he will spend a lot of time planning, but never complete it or it doesn’t succeed.  Does this sound familiar to you?

What are your ideas? Dreams? Increasing your income with passive income products, finally clearing your debt, launching a business idea, bringing connection and passion back to your marriage, writing an article for a national publication, or well, taking your life to the most amazing level???

Why haven’t you done it yet? What are your excuses?  WHY do you allow your excuses to rule?

We remain stuck and mire in our negative monologues for many reasons. Money, time, lack of information and fear are the top four but the list is long. Every single person, EVERY ONE, experiences these fears!  So what do the successful and fulfilled do when their fear and excuses try to dominate their world? How do they throttle themselves forward?

First, they expect to win.  Even during the current economic downturn that has impacted most, these individuals expect to succeed and move toward their dreams.  Second, these people act daily and deliberately to reach their dream.  They seek the best strategies and create a plan to get there.

How do I know? Because these successes belong to my clients. One client just landed his dream job and makes 50% more than he did at his previous job (from which he was fired!).  Another launched her own business and opened a store–right in the midst of the economic turbulence.  Another expanded his sales by 120% in six months.  Still another, a stay-at-home mom, started her out-of-the-home business and now supplements the family’s income.  She does what she loves and makes money doing it!

What’s their secret?  They focus on their goals instead of obstacles and excuses. They parse their dreams into palatable bits and take daily steps, steadily and surely.

Is there an idea you’ve had–either one for your business, physical health, career change, or marriage–that still exists only in your head? When it pops into your thoughts do you kibosh it before you give it a chance? Do you talk yourself out it?

Follow my clients’ lead; turn that dream into action and start seeing results. Start with these eight steps:

1.  Remember your past successes.  You’ve experienced far more success than you currently acknowledge.  (Trust me, I know.)

2.  Ink it–don’t think it!  Write down your dream!  Don’t let it swirl around in that head of yours. Give that dream a landing pad!

3.  Define success. You cannot hit a target you cannot see.

4.  Plan in 90-day chunks–this a time frame we can get our mindset around. Take 30-minutes to identify what you want to accomplish in the next 90-days.  Then, break down your steps into smaller, doable chunks.

5.  Every day answer, “What is my next step?”  Remember, don’t allow yourself to get overwhelmed…only focus on your next step.

6.  Don’t work alone.  Partner up with someone who will hold you accountable.  Statistics show we complete at least twice as much when we are held accountable.

7.  Be certain of your success. Expect to win. Successful people rehearse winning in their mind over and over again.  When they take their starting positions, they simply recreate what their mind already expects.

8.  Take immediate action in the next 24-48 hours.  Once you’ve identified your goal and created a plan, never leave a day without being one step closer to its realization.

What will you choose? Excuses and a limiting mindset? Or the realization of your dream? The power lies within you. The answers and wisdom which will fuel your dreams are right before you. Grab the momentum and make it happen!

To a fabulous next step,

Rita

Feeling Overwhelmed? Try this…

Recently, a lot of my clients are feeling completely overwhelmed because of the many directions they’re being pulled.  From the double-digit to-do lists to the strategic business and life building they feel they “should” be doing, to the simple pleasures they’d like to enjoy, they feel the inverse relationship between time and the overload of tasks to complete.

As a person who prides myself on knowing what to do in some of life’s greatest dilemmas, you can imagine my disillusionment when not too long ago I, too, felt overwhelmed.  In the past, I’d sit and stew in my overwhelmed state, allowing it to confiscate my happiness and productivity. The difference today is that I don’t stay there like I did a decade ago–now I use the following tips to kick overwhelm in the proverbial fanny…

  1. Come back to this moment. By the time we feel overwhelmed, we are far from being present in the moment.  Overwhelm usually pushes us to reside in either the past or the future, feeling guilty about something we didn’t do, say, or get OR worrying about what hasn’t happened yet.  The present is the only place we can be happy. How to come back to the moment? Take a breath and say, “I’m back.”  Your focus will return to the ‘now.’
  2. Do your best in the moment you are in. This tool is a life changer.  When brushing your teeth, give it your best job. When with your kids, give your attention to them not your iPhone.  When in a company meeting, give your best to your colleagues not your grocery list. Do your best. Give your A-game. Besides the positive results of being present in your relationships, you will also stop second guessing the “what-ifs” and “I should’ves” because you’ll know that you gave your best!  Try this all day today and notice how you return to your peak state.
  3. Love your life NOW. Yes, I mean now. Not when you double your business revenue, successfully launch your product, lose the weight, eradicate your debt, or hear your spouse say, “I love you.”  See the greatness and wealth in your life today. It is there…that moment you are in. Your happiness and well-being always precede your other successes.
  4. Take bold action–begin it now. You cannot feel overwhelmed and act boldly at the same time.  The two cannot occupy the same space.  Act boldly, even if you are afraid.  From CEO’s to successful entrepreneurs, home-based moms to editors-in-chief of national publications, each one experiences fear. Heck–even uber-talented Michael Jordan admitted feeling nervous before every game.  The key difference? Successful, high-achievers don’t let overwhelm and fear paralyze them. They simply take the next step and keep moving.
  5. The one thing. A word about our unrelenting To Do Lists: in one moment, you cannot focus on 27 urgent To Dos. Isn’t possible. But with the gift of one moment, you CAN focus on one thing.  Author Michael Neill recommends you take your To Do list and stick a Post-it note on top.  On that Post-it note write, “The only thing I have to do today is…” , then complete the sentence by picking the one thing that is of highest priority.  Do it.  Once it’s completed, cross it off and fill in the blank again.  This tool provides clarity, focus and boldness to take the one action.  (I like it because you don’t get overwhelmed again looking at the long list!)

Face it: your business and career results are intertwined in your personal life whether you like it or not.  Make your well-being a high priority. Send overwhelm packing and start living right now.

Here’s to an exceptional week!

Do You Demonstrate a Value For Your Time?

Recently, I wrote about letting go. It seems many of you know you need to let certain things go, but find doing so scary and difficult. I get that. I was there, too. Do you ever feel like…

you can’t stop thinking of work, even when you’re relaxing.
your mind is always racing and never seems to “shut down.”
you feel like you are drowning or suffocating.
you skip meals to fit in more.
your important relationships with spouse, friends, kids and family members are deteriorating?

If you answered “yes” to any of these then you may be suffering from an inability to let things go. These are the warning signs that you are working hard, but not smart, and that it is time to delegate and ask for help.

Let me explain it this way: what is your time worth? I coached a client who owns a large company. He insisted on editing his own communications because nobody could do it as well as he could…because “it’s just as easy for me to do it, because it’ll take too long to explain it to someone else” AND because “it costs too much to pay someone else to do it”. Yet, he complained that the editing took hours from his week and that he suspected that his 25% drop in sales correlated to his lack of dedication to his broader responsibilities.

His inability to let go caused him to suffer in big ways–both financially and personally. His life satisfaction was looooow.

We figured out that his hourly rate was $250. I asked him if he would pay an editor $250/hour. He said no. He saw the light–he realized he shouldn’t be doing the work. He decided to let go and delegate all work that wasn’t worth his hourly salary. He found a $40/hour editor and reduced his 12-hour day to 10 hours. And he found the time to take a mountain-biking trip with his son which is his true definition of real success!

But before you say, “well I don’t make $250/hour” and tune out, listen further. Perhaps you aren’t making any money–right now. Before you scoff at what I say, let me ask you this: what are you not doing or experiencing because you aren’t getting help? Are you missing out on an opportunity to make money because you spend your time doing things you could delegate or pay others to do?

Recently I met with my client, a mother of two small children and a home-based freelance writer. She discussed her utter frustration with her inability to do it all. Parent, work, clean, cook, play. Completely capable and highly functional (sometimes the worst combo when it comes to letting go), I asked her what she could delegate to others, maybe the house cleaning? She argued that spending money on a cleaning lady was a silly waste of money because she could do it herself. “Why pay someone else to do what I myself can do?” Even though her house being a mess was enough to make her stark-raving mad. And even though the current state of her home actually rendered her immobile, verging on depression.

She realized she wasn’t finishing an article (with a potential pay-out of almost $2,000) because she wasn’t willing to pay someone $20/hour to clean her house. When viewed in this light, she saw the error in her thinking.

I’ll never forget a client who was a successful 45-year-old male. He sat with me recalling that all he remembers his mother doing was cleaning–even when he asked her to play. He told me how much he resented that. Well that statement left me scared and willing to change my ways. I still wonder what my children will say about me 20 years from now. And then I ask …what else do I need to let go of? What do you?

Here’s how to start:

First, you need help in order to focus on the money-making aspects of your business. Second, when you insist on doing it all–just because you can–your life’s satisfaction and ultimate success are at risk.

Some thoughts and beliefs to support you in changing your ways:

Purchase opportunities and experiences versus things.

Let others do what they are good at, and you do what you are good at.

Trust that when you provide others opportunities, opportunities will come back to you.

Know there is a way to work and live smarter than the way you are now.

The best investment you can make is in YOU. You are your greatest asset. Act like it.
